In collaboration with WWF and University of Winchester, we are part of a creativity research program led by Professor Paul Sowden. This initiative, funded by Arts Council England, aims to empower children to be creative problem-solvers.
Their project, Wild Hampshire, involves artistic workshops with 350 children and teachers from 11 primary schools, inspired by WWF's Wild Isles series, to explore and respond to the local Hampshire environment through various creative arts.
Open House provides an opportunity for a new audience to experience full-scale productions. Facilitators offer insights into opera storylines, musical themes, and production details. Attendees will meet the creative teams, cast, orchestra members, and backstage technicians to understand the rehearsal process and technical aspects. It's a chance for many to visit a professional theatre for the first time, with the hope that exposure to opera singers, orchestral music, and staged productions will inspire a desire for more. Stay tuned for details on the 2024 workshops.
Following the successful pilot in Spring 2023 we are extending our Gosport Education Cultural Project, in partnership with Hampshire Music Service. The project will involve artistic workshops led by local teams, drawing inspiration from local culture throughout history. These workshops will take place in schools and educational settings, encouraging creativity in various forms, and the resulting works, including songs, poetry, jazz, dance, art, and sculpture, will be showcased at the Festival at the Fort in July 2024.
In August 2024, the 'opera in a week' experiences return, gathering around 80 young participants at The Grange to create a contemporary opera in just five days. Themes revolve around social issues like the impact of social media on mental health or environmental challenges. Guided by professionals, participants will collaboratively develop the story, music, lyrics, costumes, props, and movement. The programme prioritises the process over the final product, providing an immersive experience for creative exploration in music, drama, dance, and design, encouraging participants to challenge themselves and enhance collaboration and communication skills. The culmination is a performance for friends and family on The Grange Festival stage.
