Dance@TheGrange 2020 promises to be more spectacular than ever with star talent joining us from Company Wayne McGregor, Birmingham Royal Ballet, The Royal Ballet, Ballet Black, American Ballet Theatre and more. Balancing a thrilling programme of new commissions, Olivier Award winning pieces and critically acclaimed dancers, this year’s line-up will thrill and inspire.
Joining Mthuthuzeli November’s 2020 commission for iconic Royal Ballet supremo and Grange Festival patron Edward Watson will be a new commission from US based British born choreographer Gemma Bond (ex ABT and Royal Ballet). Building on Gemma’s stellar choreographic successes abroad, including the 2018 receipt of the Clive Barnes Foundation Award for Dance, The Grange Festival commission will be her first in the UK – outside her early experiments in the Sir Kenneth MacMillan Choreographic competition at the Royal Ballet School aged 13! We are delighted Gemma’s journey comes full circle and that we can celebrate her and all that she has achieved with an original work for our Festival.
The intimate surroundings of The Grange Festival theatre allow unparalleled access to dancers and the dance. We see every muscle and fibre of the performers work and can connect directly with their eyes and emotional expressions. This is one more reason performances at The Grange are so extraordinary. Imagine seeing Birmingham Royal Ballet Principal dancers Brandon Lawrence (Best Male Classical Performance 2019 Critics Circle Awards) and powerhouse Celine Gittens dance Wayne McGregor’s Olivier Award winning duet from 2Human at this close range. This summer you can. Set to Bach’s glorious Partita No.2 in D minor for solo violin (played live) this fierce en pointe duet challenges all expectations about what ballet can be. It is with great pride that we thank Carlos Acosta for including The Grange Festival in his first season as Director, the beginning of a bright collaboration for the future.
After a decade touring the globe, FAR danced by Company Wayne McGregor will have its farewell shows at The Grange Festival. With music by Ben Frost and performed in a digital LED environment by the celebrated art collective RANDOM INTERNATIONAL, this magical work will transfix, move and amaze.
And that’s not all………watch out for more special details of our programme coming soon! Until then, our unique combination of performers and choreographers this year are from multiple countries: New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, US, UK, South Africa and diverse major companies; we all dance and travel internationally and we want to share our passion for dance directly with you. We are looking forward to sharing our stories both on stage and off, so please join us.
